How Violence is Depicted in Peaky Blinders

S1 EP 6

In the sixth Episode of the first Season of Peaky Blinders, Billy Kimber realizes he has been betrayed by Tommy Shelby, so he must return to Birmingham to kill the Peaky Blinders. Caught off guard, Tommy is largely outmanned, so they must try their best. The scene opens with intense music and the two sides marching towards each other. The camera is still and from a distance when viewing Kimber, but as it follows the Peaky Blinders it moves from different angles. Sometimes following closely behind and other times infront. The street is lined with smoke and fire as coal spills out of the buildings which adds a level of intensity and explains the hazy lighting. The music intensifies when both sides finally convene. Then, Freddie appears with a stolen machine gun which seems to make the sides a little more even. To make the audience feel apart of the standoff, the camera moves in between the lines of men staring eachother down. All of the sudden the music stops, and Ada Thorne appears. She stands in between each line, dressed for a funeral, with her and Freddie’s son. The animosity seems to drain during her stunt until Kimber shoots Tommy. The camera captures a close up of Tommy while the outside chaos is drained out, including the death of Danny Whizz Bang and Freddie’s plead for Ada to leave. Miraculously, Tommy kills Kimber and the energy of the scene evaporates. Luckily, Kimber’s men agree that it was a duel between Tommy and Billy, so there is no need to shed anymore blood.
