How Violence is Depicted in Peaky Blinders

S4 EP 1

Towards the end of the first episode of the fourth season, Tommy believes one of his cooks, Antonio, is connected to Luca Changretta’s vendetta against the Shelby family. When Tommy walks into the kitchen, he leads a very awkward introduction, questioning why a chef of Antonio’s level would be peeling potatoes. While leaving, he hands the chef money, and the audience later realizes that his suspicion is confirmed by Antonio’s casual reaction to a large tip. The scene awkwardly continues with a conversation between the head chef and Tommy. To foreshadow the violence, the chef is covered in geese blood. When Tommy attempts to shake his hand, the Chef warns Tommy that he has blood on his hand. Casually, Tommy replies “mine too” and shakes the chef’s hand. Tommy confronts the chef about Antonio’s allegiance, and he threatens the chef until he calls Antonio into the butcher room. The scene is quiet as Antonio grabs his gun and walks to the room through a dark hallway. Returning to the room, the camera focuses on Tommy’s face, as he hides along the wall. Emerging from the darkness, Antonio slowly enters the room, but Tommy surprises him as he swings an iron hook, lodging itself deep inside Antonio’s chest. The act of violence is met with a chorus of screams and loud music. Antonio is thrown across a table that is covered in blood and goose parts. Now, Tommy and Antonio’s clothes are coated with blood. The music subdues and Tommy brutally interrogates Antonio. Instead of answering Tommy’s question, Antonio curses him in Italian. Tommy shoots Antonio point blank, so thick clumpy blood splatters on Tommy’s face. The body slowly flops to the floor as Tommy moves to address the head chef. While coated in bright red blood, Tommy advises the Chef to tell Darby Sabini he picked the wrong side of the war.
